Practical Functional Assessment and Meaningful Treatment for Problem Behavior

Abstract

In this course, Dr. Hanley invites you to join him on the journey of attaining lasting freedom from tantrums, aggression, or self-injurious behavior without drugs or harsh punishment but with candies, stickers, and/or tokens. It is important to understand why the problem behavior occurs in the first place and then incorporate that understanding into the teaching of transferable communication toleration skills.

   • List and describe why it is important to conduct a functional assessment with a functional analysis as part of the process prior to treating severe problem behavior.

   • List and describe the essential components of a functional analysis of problem behavior. 
   • List and describe the essential features of an IISCA that distinguish it from a standard functional analysis. 
2. List and describe the relative advantages of an IISCA.
   • Analyze and describe the relative amount of control afforded by the IISCA relative to other functional analysis formats.
   • Analyze and describe the relative amount of control afforded by the IISCA relative to other functional analysis formats. 
   • Describe how to determine the validity of functional analyses.
3. Analyze and describe the function and skill-based treatment that leads to socially validated outcomes.
   • Describe the measures of behavior that are important for determining the success of function-based intervention for problem behavior.
   • Describe the critical elements of functional communication training.
4. Train others to implement the function and skill-based treatment across the day.
   • Describe the critical features of programming to teach children to tolerate delays to and denials of the reinforcers found to be maintaining their problem behavior. 
   • Analyze and describe how to program for functional communication responses to maintain even when most of these responses cannot be reinforced. 
   • Analyze and describe several strategies for having multiple people implement this skill-based treatment across the day.
